The Story Behind This Print
Another of Deadvlei’s ancient camel thorn trees (see I AM GROOT for the full story on how they got here) — but this one is shorter and more compact than most, its base half-buried in centuries of blown sand, which is where the title comes from.
What made this particular frame work is the light: an oval of morning sun breaking through in the upper left, set against the dark, stunted shape of the tree below it. It’s a small detail, but it’s the kind of thing you only get by being there at exactly the right moment.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
