The Story Behind This Print
The dead camel thorn trees of Deadvlei have been standing for centuries — blackened, but never decomposed, because the Namib is simply too dry for anything to rot. About 900 years ago, shifting sand dunes cut the Tsauchab River off from this clay pan entirely, and without water, the trees died out over the following centuries. What’s left are these skeletal, sun-scorched trunks, preserved almost exactly as they stood the day they lost their last source of water.
This particular tree earned its title honestly — the gnarled, reaching shape of the trunk and branches looked exactly like a certain tree-creature from the movies the moment I saw it. For a wider view of several of these trees together, see Blackened Life.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
