The Story Behind This Print

This is an old dormitory section of Kolmanskop, the Namibian diamond town abandoned in 1950 and steadily buried by the Namib Desert ever since (see Trapped for the fuller story). What makes this room different is the bathtub — sitting, oddly, right in the middle of the floor rather than against a wall.

There’s no real way to know how it ended up there. Maybe it was moved at some point, maybe the wall it once stood against simply isn’t there anymore. It’s one of those details that makes you wonder who actually used it, what their morning looked like, and why — of everything left behind in this town — that tub is the one still sitting there, decades later, waiting in the middle of an empty room.

Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
