The Story Behind This Print
Kolmanskop was once one of the wealthiest towns in Africa — a diamond boomtown with a hospital, a theater, even a tram system, built on some of the richest diamond fields ever found. Mining ceased in 1950, and once the residents left, the Namib Desert wasted no time reclaiming what they’d built. Sand has been pouring in through doors and windows ever since.
This was shot at sunrise, with the morning light breaking through a window that’s now half-blocked by a dune spilling into the room, and a door that’s barely still a door. Standing inside one of these rooms, watching the light fight its way past all that sand, it genuinely feels like being trapped. For a wider view of the same building, see Door into the Desert.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
