The Story Behind This Print
The striped sandstone of The Wave in Coyote Buttes, mirrored in a shallow pool after rare desert rain.
The Wave is a lithified dune field. The stripes running through it are the bedding planes of dunes that drifted across this ground in the Jurassic, were buried, cemented into rock, and then cut back open by erosion. The troughs hold water after rain, which here is both rare and brief — within a day or two of a storm the pools are gone.
Same September day as the wider view. We had no idea whether there would be water, but September is just after the summer monsoon, so we went in hoping the rain had left something in the troughs. It had.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
