The Story Behind This Print
Balance Rock in Arches National Park, Utah, caught on a clear spring evening.
Balanced Rock is really two rocks: a hard block of Entrada sandstone sitting on a slimmer pedestal of softer mudstone that erodes faster than the cap above it. The whole of Arches works this way — a buried salt layer collapsed long ago, cracking the rock above into parallel fins, and weather has been widening those cracks ever since. Nothing here is permanent. A smaller companion formation beside this one, Chip Off the Old Block, came down in the winter of 1975.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
