The Story Behind This Print
The full sweep of The Wave in Coyote Buttes — twin sandstone peaks framing striped troughs carved by wind over millions of years.
Access to The Wave is rationed by a daily permit lottery, which is less about the fragility of the rock than about how little of it there is — the whole formation is smaller than most people expect, a bowl you can cross in a couple of minutes. The twin peaks and the troughs between them are cross‑sections of Jurassic dunes, sliced open by erosion at an angle that happens to show the bedding to best effect. No vantage point improves on standing in it.
A September trip, and it took a few goes to get in. We tried the walk-in lottery in Kanab a number of times without luck — in the end a friend drew three permits in the online lottery, and that was how we got our day.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
