The Story Behind This Print
The Watchman peak rising over the Virgin River at Zion National Park, framed by cottonwoods just starting to catch the evening light.
The Watchman stands at the south end of Zion Canyon, and the river in front of it is the reason the canyon exists: the Virgin River has been cutting down through Navajo sandstone here for millions of years and is still doing it. The trees along the bank are Fremont cottonwoods, which grow only where their roots reach water — in this landscape a line of cottonwoods is a map of the river. Late light reaches the peak well before it reaches the canyon floor.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
