The Story Behind This Print
The Mesquite Flat sand dunes in Death Valley, catching the day’s last warm light while a single dried plant casts the only shadow on an otherwise untouched slope.
Mesquite Flat is the most accessible dune field in Death Valley, which normally means the slopes are covered in footprints by mid‑morning. Wind is the only thing that clears them. A slope this clean means either a long walk out past where people turn back, or arriving after enough wind to wipe the surface — and the day’s last light lands at about the hour the wind usually drops. A single plant on an empty face is the only thing in the frame casting a shadow.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
