The Story Behind This Print

Deep inside an Icelandic glacier ice cave, where the ice runs blue enough to feel lit from within. A tiny figure at the cave mouth is the only clue to the actual scale of the place.

This is the photograph Apple chose for its 2016 Shot on iPhone 6s campaign — it ran on billboards and buildings from Los Angeles to Tokyo, and on the back of Entertainment Weekly. See where it ran →

Deeper inside an ice cave the light is entirely secondhand. Nothing is lit directly; daylight enters at the mouth and travels through metres of ice to get anywhere, losing its red wavelengths the whole way, so the interior reads blue without anything blue being present. The far end of a cave can be dim enough to need a tripod at midday. The figure at the opening is the only reliable measure of the space, and it is a good deal further off than it looks.

Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
