The Story Behind This Print
Ice breaking free at Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and drifting slowly out toward the sea, a slow-motion journey that can take years to finish.
Jökulsárlón did not exist a century ago. It opened up as Breiðamerkurjökull retreated back from the coast, and it has been growing ever since — it is now among the deepest lakes in Iceland. Ice entering at the glacier front has one way out: the length of the lagoon, then a short river channel under the ring road, then the Atlantic.
A cloudy summer evening in 2016. Most of what you see here is aground rather than drifting — these giants are sitting on the bottom of the lagoon, melting down in place until they are small enough to make the run out to the ocean.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
