The Story Behind This Print
Weathered rock texture from the American Southwest, worn slowly down by wind and time.
Southwestern sandstone doesn’t weather evenly, and that is the whole reason it rewards looking at closely. Water moving through the rock carries dissolved minerals out to the surface, where they harden into a crust tougher than the sand behind it. When that crust finally breaks, the softer interior empties out and leaves pits, honeycombs and hollows. The dark staining on the exposed faces is desert varnish — iron and manganese laid down over thousands of years, a film only microns thick.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
