The Story Behind This Print
The Milky Way arcing over the fin we called the Sharkfin, out near Sand Dune Arch in Arches National Park, Utah.
Every arch in the park starts as a fin. A buried salt layer collapsed under Arches long ago and cracked the Entrada sandstone above it into long parallel walls; weather widens the cracks, and the few walls that happen to get undercut go on to become arches. The rest stay as they are. These are those walls — the stage before an arch, and the stage most of the rock never gets past. Against a night sky the silhouette does all the work.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
