The Story Behind This Print
The Milky Way rising over the Mesquite Flat sand dunes in Death Valley, ripples in the sand echoing the arc of stars above them.
Death Valley is one of the darkest places left in the lower forty‑eight, far enough from any city to have earned a gold‑tier dark sky designation, which is why the Milky Way comes through here with the structure still in it. The ripples in the foreground are built by the same wind that builds the dunes, at a much smaller scale — they reset within hours of a breeze. The two patterns in this frame run on clocks that could not be further apart.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
