The Story Behind This Print
A star-filled sky over the Sharkfin, near Sand Dune Arch in Arches National Park — a companion frame to the Milky Way shot from the same night in May 2018.
Pointing a camera at the same subject twice in one night usually produces two versions of one photograph. It doesn’t here, because the sky is not a fixed backdrop — the Milky Way rotates through the frame over the course of a night, so a spire with the galactic core behind it at one hour has an ordinary field of stars behind it a few hours later. Both are true to what was actually overhead. This is the quieter of the two.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
