The Story Behind This Print
A calm Icelandic shoreline, still enough to hold its own reflection.
Iceland’s coastline is almost entirely volcanic, which is why so much of its sand is black rather than pale — basalt ground down by surf instead of quartz. On the sheltered stretches, where a spit or a headland takes the swell off the water, the surf gives up and the shallows go flat enough to work as a mirror. It rarely lasts. The same weather systems that keep the island green come through fast, and a shoreline that holds a reflection at all holds it for minutes.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
