The Story Behind This Print

An iceberg emerging from thick fog on the glacier lagoon at Jökulsárlón — quiet and close to monochrome, the kind of conditions that turn an iceberg into something more like a ghost.

Fog on the lagoon isn’t weather in the ordinary sense. It forms when comparatively mild, damp air coming off the Atlantic moves over water held near freezing by the ice sitting in it, and the air gives up its moisture on contact. The effect on a photograph is to delete everything that normally gives a berg context — the glacier behind, the far shore, the waterline.

A foggy summer on the lagoon in 2024. The fog kept drifting in and out, and every time it thinned this berg would glow — then flatten off again as the next bank came through.

Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
