The Story Behind This Print
Smooth, satin-like dune curves in Death Valley, a single ridgeline dividing sun from shadow.
Death Valley holds several separate dune fields, and every one was built the same way: sand stripped off the surrounding mountains, carried down into the valley by wind, then trapped there with nowhere further to go. The crests get reworked continuously, so a ridgeline is never quite the same two mornings running. What doesn’t change is what low sun does to them — one hard edge of light along the top of the crest, and everything on the lee side dropped straight into shadow.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color.
