The Story Behind This Print

This was shot on a dark evening in May at Grand View Point, right at the end of the Island in the Sky district in Canyonlands National Park — a trail that ends abruptly at a sheer overlook with nothing between you and a thousand feet of open canyon below.

Once the sun was down, there was no light pollution at all — just sitting on the edge of the world in complete darkness, with billions of stars overhead bright enough to actually light up the landscape on their own. At the time, the park still allowed a bit of artificial light to illuminate the stairs in the frame, which is why they stand out so clearly against the dark canyon below — without it, they’d have disappeared into the shadow entirely.

It’s one of those places where the photo is really just a record of what standing there actually felt like.

Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
