The Story Behind This Print
The swirled, banded sandstone of White Pocket, Arizona — a remote formation where wind and water carved the rock into folds unlike anywhere else in the Southwest.
The swirls in this rock are a record of something going wrong. Dunes that drift, get buried and harden normally keep their layering in recognisable beds; here the sand appears to have been saturated and then collapsed while still loose, folding the bedding over on itself before anything set. Geologists call it soft‑sediment deformation. White Pocket has it on a scale that is rare anywhere, and it is the reason a formation this small draws people down a sand road that strands vehicles.
Same fall trip as the hoodoos — that one at sunset, this one just after sunrise, with light puffy clouds drifting through. This is the iconic corner of White Pocket. It also looks like X marks the spot.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
