The Story Behind This Print

Sunrise breaking over the salt polygons of Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America, its cracked salt crust stretching to the horizon.

Badwater Basin is the lowest point in North America, roughly two hundred and eighty feet below sea level, and the salt is there because water gets in and cannot get out. What rain the basin receives dissolves minerals out of the surrounding rock, pools, evaporates, and leaves the salt behind. The polygons form as the drying crust buckles against itself. Rain flattens the whole field back to a shallow sheet of water, and the pattern re‑forms from scratch as it dries.

Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
