The Story Behind This Print
A weathered, gnarled tree at White Pocket, Arizona, its silhouette doubled in a still pool against a sunset-lit rock formation.
White Pocket is in the Vermilion Cliffs, and unlike the better‑known formations nearby it needs no permit — just a long run of deep sand that turns most vehicles back. The rock is strange even by Southwest standards. Geologists think this dune field was still loose sand when it slumped and deformed under its own weight, then hardened in that collapsed state, which is why the banding folds and swirls instead of lying in neat beds. Shallow pools collect in the low spots and hold whatever stands above them.
A spring trip. A late winter storm came through the day we drove in and left about six inches of snow; as it melted it raised the water in the pools. After that it was just hoping for cloud at sunset — the pool was there, it only needed a sky worth reflecting.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
