The Story Behind This Print

A sky lit red and gold over the cone-shaped sandstone of South Coyote Buttes, the last light of the day pooling in the dark water below.

Coyote Buttes South sits in the Vermilion Cliffs, and like its northern half — the one that holds The Wave — it is rationed by a permit lottery, though a far easier one to win. Getting there still asks for high-clearance four-wheel drive and a long stretch of sand. The cone-shaped formations are known as teepees: banded Navajo sandstone, the bedding of an ancient dune field left standing as everything softer around it wore away.

A September afternoon. We got out there early, planning to stay through sunset, and spent most of it under flat overcast — it did not look like the evening was going to give us anything. Then as the sun dropped, the cloud started to lift, and it turned into this. The water is rainwater: there is no other source out there, so what falls sits in the hollows until it goes.

Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
