The Story Behind This Print
This was shot in Disko Bay, on the west coast of Greenland near Ilulissat — home to the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. The fjord is fed by the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier, one of the fastest-moving and most productive glaciers on Earth; it’s believed the iceberg that sank the Titanic originated here.
We sailed out among the icebergs in small red sailboats — the color wasn’t an accident, since a red sail reads as a sharp, saturated contrast against the pale blue-white of the ice in a way almost nothing else does. Some of these bergs are genuinely massive, calved off a glacier that puts more ice into the ocean each year than almost anywhere else outside Antarctica.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
