The Story Behind This Print
Kirkjufell from the calm side — no waterfall in this frame, just the mountain’s near-perfect cone doubled in a still lake at sunset.
Kirkjufell stands 463 metres on the north coast of the Snæfellsnes peninsula, near Grundarfjörður, and the shape is not volcanic even though the rock is. It is a nunatak — a peak that stood above the ice sheet while the glaciers of the last ice age ground down everything around it. That is where the cone comes from. Almost every photograph of this mountain includes the small waterfall on its western side; from this approach there is just the mountain and the water underneath it.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
