The Story Behind This Print
A pink and purple sunset sky boiling over the peaks of Red Rock Canyon, Nevada — one of those evenings the clouds do all the work.
Red Rock Canyon is a conservation area on the western edge of Las Vegas, and the escarpment behind these peaks is the Keystone Thrust — a fault that shoved a slab of older grey limestone up and over the top of the younger red sandstone, which is why the colour sequence runs the wrong way round. On an evening like this the rock isn’t really the subject. High cloud this far out over the Mojave catches colour long after the sun is off the ground.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
