The Story Behind This Print
This one almost didn’t happen. It was a drizzly, gray morning at Red Rock Canyon — the kind of sunrise that never actually arrives, just a flat overcast ceiling sitting low on the ridgeline with no color and no break in sight. After waiting it out with nothing to show for it (see Red Rock in the Mist for what that wait looked like), I’d more or less written the morning off and started packing up to leave.
That’s when the clouds finally lifted off the peaks, and within minutes a brief, fast-moving shower rolled through the canyon. It was gone almost as quickly as it started — but for that short window, the light broke through just right, and this rainbow arched over the sandstone. I didn’t plan for it and I didn’t wait for it; it showed up in the few minutes I almost missed by packing up early.
It’s a good reminder that some of the best light in the desert shows up right after you’ve decided the shoot is over.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
