The Story Behind This Print
This is the wait, not the payoff. Same morning as Red Rock Rainbow — a low, drizzly ceiling of cloud sitting right on top of Red Rock Canyon with no color and no sign of breaking. Sunrise came and went without ever really arriving, and the rock stayed wrapped in mist for what felt like a long time.
Most of a shoot like this is just standing there, waiting to see if the weather does anything at all. This is what that waiting looked like — the sandstone fading in and out of the fog, closer to a watercolor than the sharp desert light Red Rock is usually known for. It wasn’t until we’d nearly given up and started packing up that the clouds actually lifted, and everything changed within a few minutes.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
