The Story Behind This Print
The sandstone buttes of Monument Valley in the Navajo Nation, colored like an artist’s palette at the edges of the day.
The buttes in Monument Valley are leftovers. This was once a continuous plateau, and what stands now is the small fraction of it that happened to be capped with harder rock and so outlasted everything around it — the valley floor is where the rest of the plateau went. The towers are de Chelly sandstone, and the red is iron oxide. The valley is tribal land, managed by the Navajo Nation, and its Navajo name translates roughly as valley of the rocks.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
