The Story Behind This Print
A public path through the Arashiyama bamboo grove, just outside Kyoto. We arrived well before sunrise and there was already a group of photographers waiting on first light. The red kimono gives a splash of color against the greens and golds of the bamboo.
Bamboo is a grass, not a tree, and a grove this size is usually one organism — a single root system sending up stems that reach full height in a season and then stop. It is why the canopy is so even, and why the light coming through it is the same green everywhere.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
