The Story Behind This Print
A cluster of banded sandstone hoodoos at White Pocket, Arizona, lit at sunset — each layer a different chapter of how this rock formed.
Each band in these hoodoos is a separate episode in how the rock formed — a shift in the wind, a change in what the sand was made of, a wet period laying down a different mineral. Read bottom to top, the stripes are chronological. The reason they are visible at all is that the layers don’t weather at the same rate: the tougher bands stand slightly proud of the softer ones, so low sun catches the hard edges and leaves the soft ones in shade.
A fall trip into White Pocket — a different one again. These hoodoos are their own distinct cluster; there’s nothing quite like them elsewhere in the formation. The day was sunny from start to finish, and then a few clouds drifted through just as the sun was setting. I keep going back out there looking for different light.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
