The Story Behind This Print

From a hill above Hakone, looking the length of Lake Ashi to Mount Fuji, with the water drawn out smooth by a long exposure and the last warmth of the sky sitting behind the cone.

The small vermilion gate standing out in the water at the right is the Heiwa no Torii — the Torii of Peace — raised at Hakone Shrine in 1952 to mark the treaty that ended the Allied occupation of Japan. Unlike most torii it is built out over the lake rather than on the approach to the shrine, so visitors reach it along the shore and come up on it from behind.

Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
