The Story Behind This Print

The mouth of an Icelandic glacier ice cave, its ceiling carved into a thousand rippling facets by running meltwater. Snow-covered peaks are just visible through the opening beyond.

Glacier ice caves are made in summer and used in winter. Meltwater running over and through the ice carves the channel, and the scalloped ceiling is the signature of water under pressure moving fast against it. Once the melt season ends the system drains and refreezes, and only then is it stable enough to stand in. By the following summer the same cave has usually been enlarged beyond recognition or has collapsed outright. None of them are permanent, and none of them come back the same.

Winter 2016. A warm storm had come through days earlier and the caves were full of water — nobody was being allowed near them. On our last day in the area the weather cleared and the temperature dropped far enough to let us in. The figure at the entrance is our glacier guide. Never go into an ice cave without one.

Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
