The Story Behind This Print
A block of glacier ice washed up on Diamond Beach, backlit by a brooding sky that broke just long enough to light it up electric blue against the black sand.
Clear ice is worth more to a photographer lit from behind than lit from the front. Front light bounces off the surface and reads as glare; light coming through it passes into the ice, loses its red end to absorption on the way, and leaves the block glowing from inside. That only works for ice that has had the air worked out of it — which is exactly what the trip down the lagoon and the tumbling in the surf accomplish before it ever lands on this beach.
Winter 2016. A brutal storm had come through a few hours earlier, and only once it had tracked off to the west did we risk going out. While we were on the beach the cloud to the east began to break, and enough sun came through the gap to light this berg from behind.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
