The Story Behind This Print
Chunks of glacier ice washed up on Iceland’s black-sand Diamond Beach, scattered across the sand like clear glass.
The ice on this beach didn’t form here. It calved off the glacier into the lagoon inland, drifted the length of it, went out through the short river channel to the sea, and then got pushed back up onto the black sand by the surf. By the time it lands it has been tumbled smooth and worked clear of air, which is why it comes up like glass rather than white. The tide takes most of it back within the day. The beach is never the same twice.
A cold, rainy morning in the summer of 2016 that barely let up. It stopped just long enough to get us out onto the sand and onto this one piece of clear ice — tripod down, the surf drawn out over a long exposure as it ran in and back.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
