The Story Behind This Print
Glacier blue ice at the lagoon — the deep, almost electric blue that shows up only once ice is old and compressed enough to have had the air worked out of it.
Ice is blue to begin with. Water absorbs red light, and it does it fast — red is gone within about two metres of ice, while blue travels closer to two hundred. The catch is that ordinary ice is full of tiny bubbles that scatter light back out before it can make that journey, which is why it reads as white. Work the air out and the light goes deep enough for the red to disappear, and what comes back is this.
Another frame from the same cloudy evening. The rule is simple enough: the bluer the ice, the less air in it, and the older it is. A block like this has spent centuries under tonnes of ice before it ever reached open water.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
