The Story Behind This Print
Delicate Arch under the Milky Way, light-painted from below to bring out the texture of the sandstone against a sky full of stars.
Photographing an arch at night means choosing what the rock gets lit by. Moonlight is even but flattens the sandstone. Leaving it unlit turns the arch into a silhouette and throws away the texture that makes Entrada sandstone worth photographing in the first place. Light‑painting from below is the third option — a brief sweep from a hand‑held light during the exposure, raking across the grain to bring the surface back while the sky stays dark enough to keep every star in it.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
