The Story Behind This Print
An aerial view of Fjadrargljufur, the moss-walled canyon in southeast Iceland whose S-curve river has made it one of the country’s most photographed spots.
Fjaðrárgljúfur runs about two kilometres and drops roughly a hundred metres, and the rock it is cut into is palagonite laid down during a cold period of the ice age — something like two million years old. The canyon itself is far younger. It was carved at the end of the last glaciation, when meltwater rivers coming off the retreating ice had enormous volume and a great deal of sediment to cut with, and the river worked its way down from there. The moss is doing the rest.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
