The Story Behind This Print
Hraunfossar — “Lava Falls” — in Borgarfjordur, Iceland, where dozens of small rivulets seep out from beneath a lava field and pour into the glacial river below.
Hraunfossar means lava falls, and the name is literal: there is no river above these falls. The water is coming out of the lava field itself. Hallmundarhraun is porous enough that meltwater from the glacier beyond it travels underground through the rock for some distance, then reaches the edge of the flow where the river canyon cuts it and emerges all along the face at once. That is why it arrives as dozens of separate rivulets over a long stretch rather than as one waterfall.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
