The Story Behind This Print

The rugged, glacier-carved coastline of Greenland — rock and ice shaped by forces working on a timescale that makes a human trip feel like a blink.

Greenland’s coastline is almost entirely the work of ice. Outlet glaciers draining the ice sheet carved these valleys well below sea level, and when the ice pulled back the sea came in behind it — which is what a fjord is. The exposed rock is some of the oldest on Earth, parts of it more than three and a half billion years old. Nothing about the scale reads correctly from a photograph: what look like foothills are often thousands of feet, with no trees anywhere to calibrate against.

Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
