The Story Behind This Print
Abraham Lake isn’t a natural lake — it was created when a dam was built across a fertile valley in Alberta, and that submerged valley floor is still releasing methane gas today. As the bubbles rise through the water and the lake freezes over each winter, they get trapped in the ice, layered roughly 8 to 15 inches below the surface.
I shot this in a section locals call “the Belly of Abraham” — a very cold, windy day, waiting out the light until sunset. Standing on a frozen lake with nothing around to block the wind is a different kind of cold than anywhere else I’ve shot. But that’s part of what makes Abraham Lake worth the trip: nowhere else looks quite like this.
Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
