The Story Behind This Print

Most people just call the whole scene “Kirkjufell,” but that’s technically only the mountain — the name means “Church Mountain” in Icelandic, since from certain angles it resembles a steeple, or a pointed hat, or the prow of a ship, depending who you ask. This print is actually named for the waterfall in the foreground: Kirkjufellsfoss, or “Church Mountain Falls,” combining the mountain’s name with “foss,” the Icelandic word for waterfall. The mountain provides the backdrop; the falls are what’s actually in frame.

This was the planned finish to a long day of travel — Kirkjufell is one of the most photographed mountains in Iceland, and we arrived to find what felt like a hundred or so of our new best friends already set up along the shore. It’s a popular spot for good reason.

We were hoping for a bit more cloud cover that evening, but ended up happy with just a touch of color catching the cloud on the right side of the frame. Not every shoot gives you exactly what you were hoping for, but this one still made for a memorable end to the trip.

Each print begins as a Lumachrome exposure on metallic photographic paper, then is face-mounted beneath acrylic for extraordinary depth and color. Most images can also be custom-sized up to 120″ on the longest side — just ask.
